Mother’s Day celebrations came to Sweden in 1919 on the initiative of the author Cecilia Bååth-Holmberg (1857–1920). A booklet published in 1920 under the title “Mother’s Day” contained a number of instructions on how to celebrate Mother’s Day. They read as follows:

-The Swedish flag is raised on the flagpole at home.
-Mother is greeted in the morning with a song by the children.
-Before getting up, Mother is served good coffee and bread, prepared by the children. She is honored with flowers and a small gift.
– Mother is given, as far as possible, rest and freedom from all household chores that day. The children make the beds, sweep, cook, and wash the dishes.
-During afternoon coffee or in the evening, a small celebration is held, in which the father of the house participates.
– Children who are away send their greetings to Mother via letter, telegram, or postcard, specially made and provided for Mother’s Day.
